5 (Easy) habits for healthier, better looking skin

Skincare can sometimes feel like a mystery.

You treat your skin like a prized possession and slather it in only the finest moisturizers and serums….and then suddenly, you start breaking out again. While you may be tempted to run to your favorite spa and pick up a new product, you may not need to change your skincare routine. Chances are, there’s a small aspect in your life that you’ve overlooked that is leading to your breakouts, or other skin inconsistencies.

Here are things that could be contributing to your skin concerns:

1. Hydration

Your skin can be oily and still be dehydrated. In fact, oiliness is sometimes a sign that your skin is in need of some H20. Check in with your caffeine consumption, and make sure you are getting enough water. You could also try incorporating hydrating foods into your diet, like cucumbers, melons and berries. It’s also important that you find the right moisturizer for your skin type.

2. Clean your makeup off

Sleeping in your makeup is one of the cardinal sins of skincare. But did you know that you could still after remnants of your makeup on your face, even after you’ve double cleansed? After your think your skin is squeaky clean, wet a cotton pad in cold water and wipe it over your skin. This last step will ensure your skin is squeeky clean and clear of any remnants of cosmetics or cleanser.

3. Change your pillowcase, wrap your hair

This is something that is easy to forget, but can make the biggest difference. Your skin and hair directly touch your pillow case, and there is an inevitable build up of products, bacteria and sweat. Changing your pillowcase regularly, like say 2-3 times a week (and flipping it over), will minimize your skin’s exposure to pore-clogging elements. You could also wrap your hair with a silk scarf before sleeping which minimizes the transfer of hair products onto your skin. It will also keep protect your hair from breakage.

Eating nutrient dense food and getting enough sleep and exercise and important ways of promoting overall health and wellbeing.

4. Diet

You are what you eat. Because your body uses the nutrients from the food you consume to regenerate cells, there is a direct correlation between what you put into your body and the appearance of your skin. An easy way to add in more nutrient dense food is to start each morning with a green smoothie, that is equal mostly veggie. Add in healthy fats like avocado and watch your skin glow from the inside out. If you’re prone to breakouts, dump the dairy and white flour. Both aggravate the sebaceous glands, and cause overactive oil production.

5.  No touchy!

It can be so tempting to pick at your skin, especially if it’s been weeks since your last spa facial. When you pick your skin at home, you are actually creating an open wound that can spread under the skin, causing a more severe breakout. Also, picking often leads to scars and spots on the skin. Focus on keeping the skin clean but not over cleansing. There’s no need to cleanse more than twice a day. Spot treat by applying a mask for acne onto the blemish overnight. The absolute best mask for this is Mask Vivant from Biologique Recherche. We have it. Contact us.

It’s also important to make the time to clean your makeup brushes regularly, and maintain healthy overall skincare habits – that means finding a skincare regiment that works for you, which we would love to help you with.

Be well, be kind.
